Meet Your Instructor
Dylan Gunther
MS in Education Policy and Leadership (University of Oregon)
International Surfing Association (ISA) certified surfing instructor
Trained in ocean rescue, CPR, and first aid
BA in history with a focus on racial dynamics of surfing history
K-12 AltEd Teacher with over 10 years experience in educational spaces
Professional swim coach and instructor
Surfing historian, surf board shaper, trained educator, swim coach, and surfing guide are among some of the qualifications Dylan brings to his lessons.
At the end of the day, Dylan knows that learning spaces work the best when everyone is smiling. Having fun and staying safe are always the main goals for the Surf Academy.
Dylan began teaching surfing as a teenager for Spunky’s Surf Shop in Fort Pierce, Florida. His experiences teaching surfing, guitar, and swimming launched a career in education. After 20 years of working with students of all ages in varied educational settings, Dylan brings his pedagogical training and love for learning back to the ocean as the founder and lead instructor for the Sunset Bay Surf Academy.
